Fifth Precinct Stadium
Engineering Bureau, Fenwick Iribarren
Architects, Hilson Moran
The 5th Precinct Stadium was designed to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar and is envisioned for Group, Round of 16, and Quarter Final stage matches during the competition. In accordance with FIFA Requirements, it was designed for 40.000 net spectator seats and all in all total area occupies about 515.400sqm. The ideative concept of the project is the Gahfiya, a traditional skullcap worn by young boys and older men in Qatar. It is possible to find
this concept applied in different ways within the project. One of the most relevant example is the cladding and covering for the façade. Indeed the goal is to translate the shape and the weave of the cap in an architectonic volume and pattern. The yarn interlaced creates a drawing as well as a series of panels are drilled to remember its
texture. This escamotage lets the light cross the building skin, in order to create an evocative figure. In the end, for Qatari people it is a well-known icon and for foreigner a mark of local folklore and moreover an encounter of tradition and contemporary architecture. The studio took part into the Value Engineering tender, and was the
leader of the tender design consultant team.
