The Monte Ciocci – San Pietro pedestrian and cycling path project, developed by CREW on behalf of RFI – Italian Railway Network, is part of the strategic and priority initiatives planned for the 2025 Jubilee of the Catholic Church. The project aims to enhance sustainable and active mobility in Rome by creating a new 1.5 km-long connection between the existing “Monte Mario – Monte Ciocci” cycle path and the area around St. Peter’s Basilica.

The intervention crosses Rome’s Districts XIV, XIII and I and is distinguished by its integrated urban regeneration approach, focused on the reuse of disused railway infrastructure, namely the Fornaci Viaduct and the Villa Alberici Tunnel. These elements are transformed into a new active mobility corridor, providing both functionality and a strong visual identity within the urban landscape.

The project represents a transformation of public space, revitalizing neglected areas and returning them to public use, while creating new opportunities for social interaction, tourism, and intermodal connections. The new path links with key public transport hubs, such as San Pietro Railway Station and Valle Aurelia Metro Station, thus supporting bike-train intermodality and ensuring universal accessibility, especially for people with reduced mobility.

A key feature of the intervention is the creation of a section of the New Urban Via Francigena, designed for pilgrims and tourists, but also for daily commuters. The path extends to the so-called “Passeggiata del Gelsomino”, providing a direct and symbolic connection to St. Peter’s Basilica and enhancing the value of Jubilee-related urban spaces.

The Monte Ciocci – San Pietro cycling and walking path is a concrete example of green infrastructure that combines sustainable mobility, architectural reuse, and urban quality. It addresses the immediate needs related to the 2025 Jubilee, while leaving a lasting legacy for everyday mobility in Rome, contributing to a more accessible, resilient, and inclusive city.
