Architecture Generating Landscape

The Catania Waste-to-Energy Plant project is rooted in the ambition to redefine the role of contemporary environmental infrastructure, transforming a strategic waste management facility into a catalyst for urban and landscape quality.

Located within the Pantano d'Arci area, in a context characterized by large-scale infrastructure and productive systems, the project moves beyond the traditional conception of the industrial plant as an isolated technical facility. Instead, it proposes an architectural intervention capable of establishing new relationships with the surrounding territory. Within this vision, architecture becomes the force that generates the landscape. The composition of the building volumes, the design of open spaces, and the integration of natural elements define a cohesive system in which industrial function, public space, and environmental quality coexist in balance.

The facility is organized through a clear volumetric composition that provides identity and recognizability to the intervention, translating technological complexity into a contemporary architectural language. A strong public dimension is embedded within the infrastructure itself. Accessible roofs, green areas, pedestrian pathways, gathering spaces, and facilities dedicated to visitors and environmental education create an open and inclusive system, capable of transforming a technical facility into a new urban landmark.

The complex is not limited to accommodating a productive function; it becomes a place for interaction, learning, and exchange between the city, technology, and the environment. Landscape is not conceived merely as a mitigation strategy but as an integral component of the design approach. Through the design of open spaces, the introduction of new green systems, and the creation of places dedicated to the community, the project generates a renewed environmental and perceptual quality for the site. Architecture thus creates a new contemporary landscape in which nature, technological innovation, and public space are integrated into a single design vision.

The Catania Waste-to-Energy Plant embodies a new idea of public infrastructure: a project capable of combining technical efficiency, environmental sustainability, and architectural quality, contributing to the transformation of the territory and fostering a new relationship between industry, city, and landscape.
