Acireale Station
Located on the Messina-Syracuse railway line, just two kilometers from the historic heart of the city, Acireale Station represents a meeting point between modernity and tradition. The redevelopment project aims to breathe new life into a place that has long symbolized passage and connection but whose role as the gateway to the city has gradually faded over time. Transforming the station square, adjacent areas, passenger building, railway underpass, and vertical connections to the platforms means restoring the station’s original identity as a welcoming and functional space – not just for transit, but also for rest and gathering.
The redesigned square, envisioned as an intermodal hub, serves as a connection point between different modes of transport and ways of experiencing urban space. Paved with Modica stone, adorned with green areas, and equipped with rainwater management systems, the square now stands as a harmonious balance between functionality and environmental respect – a space ready to welcome both departing and arriving travelers.
Inside the Fabbricato Viaggiatori (Passenger Building), the interiors have been reimagined to host information points, new restrooms, and commercial spaces, blending the historical structure with modern interpretations while respecting local traditions. The external facades, clad in Modica stone and enhanced with lava stone tiles, visibly express a sense of belonging to the region.
The interventions in the railway areas are designed to guide travelers to their trains through clear and safe pathways. The platforms have been raised to improve boarding and alighting, while accessibility is ensured by the installation of elevators and tactile paths. The underpasses have been aesthetically renovated and made safer with the addition of surveillance cameras and improved lighting.
Restored canopies and a new covered ramp connecting the municipal parking lot to the station form part of an urban mosaic designed to create seamless and inclusive access experiences.
