Monterotondo - Mentana Station
The station is located on the Rome-Florence railway line, serving the municipalities of Monterotondo and Mentana. The surrounding area is characterized by residential, industrial, and productive zones.
The redevelopment project for the station, commissioned by RFI, focuses on improving accessibility, enhancing historical buildings, upgrading external areas, and optimizing safety, pursuing a transformation that goes beyond the function of a simple railway infrastructure.
As part of a revitalization process that pays attention to historical details and contemporary efficiency, the project includes the restoration of historical elements of the Passenger Building, constructed in the late 19th century and protected as a cultural asset.
The building's interior will be reconfigured to better accommodate travelers, eliminating architectural barriers. Externally, the surrounding landscape will be enriched with repaving, the creation of parking spaces for vehicles and bicycles, and the expansion of pedestrian areas, complemented by public greenery that renews the atmosphere, making it more welcoming and sustainable.
Support buildings, such as the Technology Building and the Services Building, will also undergo interventions aimed at improving their efficiency. The former Goods Warehouse will be demolished and rebuilt. The new building design includes expanding the podium to create a paved walkway with seating and perimeter greenery. On the façade, a louvered shading system modernizes the building and optimizes energy efficiency. The shape of the existing roof, with its large triangular overhang, will be preserved and highlighted through coordinated metal cladding with the canopies. A low-maintenance green roof is planned. Internally, the building will remain in a raw state, a gesture that invites future flexible uses in line with community needs.
The pedestrian and cycling underpass will be fully renovated, with new flooring, elevators, and a lighting system designed to make the space brighter and safer. The canopies, which protect passengers on the railway platforms, will be renewed and expanded, ensuring greater comfort while preserving the historical canopy on the second platform.
Sustainability remains a guiding principle throughout the project, with the installation of photovoltaic systems, the use of recycled materials, and energy efficiency strategies that minimize environmental impact.
Through this transformation, Monterotondo-Mentana station is no longer just a point of departure and arrival but becomes a symbol of the dialogue between past and present – a model of infrastructure that projects itself into the future while respecting and enhancing its historical and social context.
